Female Hair Loss Causes

Female Hair Loss Causes

Every human head’s hair is made of individual units called follicles.  When the hair is healthy, an average female hair follicle grows hair at a rate of 1/2 an inch a month.  On average, each follicle will grow for between 2 to 6 years.  At that point, the follicle rests for a period.  It then falls out, and a new hair follicle cycle will start.

Androgens interferes with this growth process.
Androgens include testosterone and DHT.  Women make these hormones in small quantities as compared to men.  Then these hormones come in contact with the hair cells on the scalp, they change to a new potent DHT, which then binds with receptors deep within the hair follicle.  Over time, DHT excess builds up, almost like plaque build up in the heart to cause heart attacks.  This build up of DHT causes the hair follicle to shrink.  Follicles eventually die, and others become incapable of growing new hair.  This is what causes hair loss and Alopecia in women.

At any one time, 90% of our hair is growing, and 10% is in the rest stage. After 2 to 3 months, the resting hair falls out, and new hair starts to grow.  This is in healthy hair.  In female pattern baldness, Alopecia, hair loss, the cycle is interrupted.

There are many other reasons that hair loss occurs on a temporary basis, and is usually resumed when rectified.  Hair Loss from stress and illness is temporary.  An overactive thyroid gland can cause hair loss.  Hair Loss after 3 months of a baby being born is another, due to a high level of certain hormones.  blood thinners, gout medicines, birth control pills and anti-depressants can also cause hair loss.  Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children.  Cancer therapies and medications also causes human hair loss along with Diabetes and Lupuscan.

If you use pigtails, tight hair rollers, or cornrows, you can cause Traction Alopecia.  If stopped before scarring, it can be stopped, if not it can be permanent.
